Doing a cookbook: How I decided to document all my family recipes in a cookbook

Some time ago I decided to start documenting my family's recipes. My mom comes from Perú, my father is Argentinean, my grandparents are Chinese and Spanish, so the food at home was extremely diverse.

Just before deciding to move out from home, I decided all this needed to be documented. This is how a journey of documenting more than 60 recipes began for 8 years. Photography of each dish, copywriting of the recipes and graphic design of the book were done by me.

Here are some details of the book and the process I followed to make plus some tips cause everything doesn't always go as planned 😅

As my two previous photobooks (Erasmus photobook and China trip photobook) I decided to print in Blurb (Even though I wish Blurb have sponsored this post, this is not sponsored just honest review haha)

Biggest Learnings of Food Photography as Amateur

  - Natural light is everything
  - Learn how to do a balance composition, like adding extra elements to the picture, maybe some ingredients, a spoon, another plate, a glass.
  - Play with color contrast and textures!
  - Take the photos fast! (you can tell when the soup you are doing a photo is cold or the ice cream is melting)

Before making this book I hadn't had any experience in food photography. I started documenting my family recipes just one year before I move away from home, I was 17 years and this was 2011 (left photo). I finally got to finish it in 2019 (right photo). This is the reason that pictures in the book are diverse in quality, they not only reflect my family cuisine but also reflect 8 years of learning and improvement.

Latita de galletitas para regalar / Cookie Packaging

As I said in the previous post, I love giving away homemade cookies in this season! But I always have the doubt on how to package them....
So this time I made them thinking in putting them it inside a can, I used a condensed milk can but can be any can... I follow Martha Stewart recipe, they are super easy, and the melted candy make them look so pretty!
I cover the can with a dotted paper, then I cut a circle in white cardstock and joined everything with a big red bow!
I hope you like the idea! You can show me your projects here
Love, Agus

Top 6 Cookie Recipes

Christmas Season starts! and what nicer gesture than giving cookies to our loved ones! (here is so hot lately that baking is almost imposible... so if you dont have to deal with 40c degrees, bake for me lol). So, this are my top 6 favorite cookie recipes

Since I moved to Buenos Aires I don't craft that much because I dont have any stuff to do it with... so I spent most of my time sitting in my desk making homework or at Pinterest... So I decided I wanted to do something we the few things I have!
I looove baking and I found baking the closest thing to downloading food, a person of the other part of the world share a recipe with you, and you make it and get the exact same thing from miles away!
Crafting as well as baking clear my mind for a while and take me away from all this "University world" We all need a little bit of this in our lives from time to time!
Now to the recipe, the original one was filled with chocolate, but, come on! I live in Argentina, so I filled with Dulce de Leche, much easier, much yummier! So here is the recipe in English is from La receta de la Felicidad's Blog, one of my favorite cooking blogs!!

I almost never take step by step photos because my camera end all dirty, I really admire blogger who takes step by step photo recipes! But this time I try with my cellphone and make a little video on Instagram:

5.  Sacarlas y hornearlas a 170º grados por 5 a 8 minutos

I hope you enjoyed the recipe, and let me know if you would like to see more recipes in my blog!
Love, Agus
